As time passed, Ron and I found things that made Ron's usage of "The Arm Thing" easier. We would like to pass those along to you:
- The shorter or regular length "Arm Thing" is for people with wrist strength and hand control but weak arms or shoulders.(pictured below)
- The extended wrist support "Arm Thing " is for people with weak wrists and hands along with weak shoulders and arms. We recommend the Extended Wrist Version for those that have a progressive disease like ALS.(pictured below)
- Order before your arms and hands get too weak. It will help you enjoy your meals and help with maintaining strength while trying to feed yourself.
- Keep the non-slip base clean, just a little soap and water.
- If there is a table cloth, move it over and let "The Arm Thing" sit directly on the table.
- Ron started out with regular eating utensils but as he weakened he went to angled eating utensils. One client (see the FAQ page) uses a strap on utensil.
- Using a plate with sides (like a cake pan) will help load the food on the eating utensil.
- It takes a little practice to decide where to place "The Arm Thing" relative to the plate. Ron places his"Arm Thing" about 2'' from the edge of a regular sized plate close to the edge of the table. Large oval plates may have to be turned occasionally because they are so long.
- Move the C-channel to the back to get the highest lift to "The Arm Thing" (this takes the most strength). Move the C-channel to the center when your arm is getting too tired.
- Take it with you wherever you go and enjoy yourself. We certainly do!!!
